Track and Field is a sport by Olympic definitions... then again so is ball room dancing... 
My previous definition doesn't make a subjective judgment based on some undefined degree of "athleticism"
A sport has defined of rules for points to determined a winner. An athletic competition has obvious objectives that don't have a system of rules determining them, objectives such time, distance, height, speed, accuracy, weight, etc. An athletic performance is a competition which judged subjectively by a 3rd party.

Mark Martin is 53 years old and had 2 top ten finishes in 2011.
You can't even be a kicker in the NFL at 53 let alone a good one.
