So how are the Game of Thrones books?
Any good? Will reading them totally ruin my TV series enjoyment due to a lot of stuff being wrong, or are they pretty close?
Brother sent me a text saying the third book went to hell or something.

I loved them up until the fourth book. I think the fifth book might have been even worse. I'll still read the next one when it comes out, though, because I'm hooked now.

Book 1 vs. the TV show was pretty bang on accurate up until the last 1-2 episodes were they skimp on some meat and potatoes, and change the Drogo storyline.
Books are entertaining. Book 3 is most people's favorite. The first 60% is fairly straight forward and boring...and then it goes into OMG overdrive.
Reading the books MIGHT make watching more enjoyable as you'll already 'know' all the characters instead of being confused. In book 2 they introduce a whole lot more characters.

There's some delight in ale and wine,
And some in girls with ankles fine,
But my delight, yes, always mine,
Is to dance with Jak o' the Shadows.

Forth and Fifth were bad in what ways exactly? Just long and boring like how WOT sort of breaks down between book 5-8 or something else?
Also, what are the names of all the books and are the pre-quels worth reading? My brother has some of them behind me on the shelf in no particular order....

Book 4 and Book 5 were supposed to be the same book, but it was too massive.
So he split the characters up, a few got book 4 (the rest aren't in book 4), the rest got book 5 (with no book 4 characters present).
Think we got used to action on all fronts and seeing all our favorite characters. *shrug*

They made me mad. Unfinished stories, threads left hanging, characters you like killed off with no fanfare, just oh that guys dead. Overly descriptive of food. Blah.

pretty much this, in book 4 we got an overload of stupid Sansa and Brienne, not enough Tyrion or Jon.
then in book 5 Daenerys, who had kicked ass up until now, suddenly turned into post-"The Matrix" Neo: "OMG I don't know what to do next? What do I do? Tell me, anybody!"
The books in order are:
A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows
A Dance with Dragons
