i took that as a realization point for Shane that made him think about leaving (or kicked out of) the group.
as far as above with the cops, that was weird and doesn't make sense, especially where they are all split open and take zombie blood showers.
and the potato silencer was not the effect, he couldn't get a clear shot so he shot through.

Well I am pretty sure it is not an official commonly known "figure of speech", that is just the phrase I coined to describe it because when he did it I thought of a potato silencer, aka Zombie silencer or suppressor.
What do you call a Zombie with a bomb planted in it?

I think you gotta cut the writers some slack here.
You cannot expect them to just have the team killing off horde after horde after horde after horde after horde after horde after horde of zombie.
They have to develop a story, they have to give you a reason to care.
90 minute movies are for killing tons of zombies. Not a series.

I watched it again last night and forgot one major key point in the discussion between Rick and Shane on the road before they went to drop off the kid.
They finally discussed killing Otis and it certainly appeared to me that they both, definitely Shane, agreed in some way that Otis should have died. My guess is both still blamed him for Carl getting shot, which is true, but it was not on purpose.
It just appeared they both agreed it was just because he shot Carl. I did not expect this from Rick but oddly understand it at the same time.
