I've never known anyone that does that.
I like butter and peanut butter on Ritz or Saltine crackers though.

I thought so too at first, but on second thought if the butter was cold and the bread was not warm at all a decent coating would keep the bread from getting jelly soggy for a bit. Reasoning is sound temperature and timing is questionable.

No it doesn't. What may be misleading you is when hot toast melts butter and gets softer than it was when it was toasted cripsy. If you spread butter on cold bread, it makes a grease barrier between the water in the jelly and the dry bread, keeping the jelly from soaking into the bread.
