This is what I was thinking. "Beat up asshole" as your first thought is both putting the blame, partly or mostly, in the wrong hands and degrading to women.

You can also let Dave know that his kids are welcome to visit/play/interact with yours and your family whenever he thinks that would be good/helpful. That may be a way of providing some support to him as he wrestles with what he needs to do. They are the reason this whole thing started in the first place.

doubtful after a trip to the mental hospital was on the books for drug abuse. Lawyers are always good to have tho in those situations.
