oh yeah i'm not using a stone knife. i'm using a rare sword i got from the skeleton king on my demon hunter. it's got insanely high dps for a level 2 weapon.  like 15.8 or something ridiculous. it does more dps than most 2h weapons until level 9ish i think.

anyway, the wizard doesn't have any skills that gain but they get a whole bunch of no mana use skills so i see what you're saying. wd is just so.. boring. the pets you get don't do anything of note and that's like all you get in the early levels. here's some more pets that will do 1 damage spam.
There's at least one rune for every one of the no-cost spells that grants you arcane energy either on hit, or crit.
Also, since it's a limited beta and only level 13 level cap, we don't get to see some of the better items. I'm pretty sure past like 25 or so the WD weapons start having bonuses you just can't give up. You also gain damage from using their offhand Voodoo doll things. They are still by far the worst class in the lower levels though.
After looking on the item database on the D3 site, wtf. The Legendary WD dagger at Lv60, the very last one, has like 700-1k dps, which is 3-4x more than any other 1hander. 
Double WTF, that's over 2x more than any weapon on the database. That must be a bug or something.

it pretty much is the necro. you just get animals and weird little midget things instead of skeletons.

yeah but why would they bring it back after pretty much killing it in d2? its like someone decided one type of nuke mage was enough and that a bone necro wasn't different enough from sorceress.

They didn't change a ton. Skill setup/tree is a bit different. You get more passive skills.
Gameplay and classes didn't change much IMO

Flavor was better, plus no resistance issues anywhere except Act II of Hell diff
