Sounds like a fair deal. She got to live the lifestyle of the .00001%. How much is that worth?

For several years we had au pairs who cared for our children in exchange for room and board plus some "pocket money".

1. They had their own bedroom, not a closet (though I can understand that in a palatial mansion a closet can be as large as a small bedroom). Our house is not large, but for the time they were with us, our home was their home.

2. They were limited in the number of hours they could work -- not more than ten hours a day, not more than 45 hours a week. Child care is tiring, and I think 17 hours a day is way too much.

3. They had health care and dental care provided through the agency, which our fees helped pay for.

4. They were required to take classes, for which the agency provided reimbursement...again, paid for by the fees we gave to the agency.

5. Other than the normal restrictions that come with being on a J-1 visa, when they weren't "on duty", they could do pretty much as they liked. They had time off and leisure time. We would never have considered confiscating a girl's passport to restrict her movements -- such a thing would be unthinkable, it amounts to slavery, and I am amazed and appalled that anyone would do this.

I understand that to some people hired help aren't "people", but I frankly have trouble comprehending that attitude. But then, I grew up poor and can't see myself as better than any other hard worker who's doing an honest job.

I realize now I do not fear death. I fear my daughter will not be free when I die.

Slavery is part of the GOP economic plan. Abolish the minimum wage law and what do you get?

It's so simple! One line magic! Just parrot the Republican pamphlets, no need to think.
