Why will the kids need therapy? Marriages break down all the time, fathers (and mothers) leave for new relationships all the time, what makes this one so different? It's not like he was screwing the girl in front of his kids or anything.

Because I've tended to notice that broken homes and missing parents are a catalyst for all sorts of things going wrong in a childs life. Whether its losing them to drugs, death, divorce...whatever. Kids need their parents.

This is true, but not always the case. You just seemed adamant that in this particular case, something the father did had "screwed" his kids, meaning they would guaranteed need therapy.
I hate to be so blunt, but marriages break down, and not all kids from broken marriages end up with the problems you listed. Yes, kids need their parents, but he hasnt said (as far as we know, anyway) "i never want to see my kids ever again" or whatever. They will still HAVE their parents, just not as one unit any more.

Depends how old they are. Lots of kids are mentally fked up from coming from a broken home, even if the split was amiable, if they can remember it.
I still remember this ridiculously hot chick I knew in HS having a minibreakdown and telling me that I didn't understand because my parents weren't divorced. I laughed at her, because my parents divorced when I was two, I just didn't remember it.
