why don't you tell him exactly what's wrong then..
nobody likes a guessing game and guys are wired to not care about most of the piddly stuff women do.

getting on the girl's nerves slightly is a good strategy. getting the girl all emotional and aroused is good cuz they misattribute the arousal for feelings for the person doing the poking. the guy is spiking their bp---- basically? and hoping for a favorable interpetation on the girl's part.
thing is, it gets pretty annoying after a while. it's a short-term strategy on the guy's part.
