The bike i want is cheap new, but it's much cheaper with a few thousand miles on it. There are very few downsides to buying used cars, but is a bike different?

Every bike I ever bought in my life was used. Potential problems depend upon who rode it before you and how they treated it. Never owned a Harley (or hung out with people that do) so I have no idea how they hold up.

Okay. What about mileage? Cars can be good until 200k miles if taken car of, are bikes similar? Is a 25k mile bike nearing its end or pretty much new?

Used ones are even bigger maintenance hogs.

Care by the owner is even more important with a used bike.

Except for some of the highway tourers I wouldn't buy a bike with over 25k miles.

I have only bought used bikes too over the years like 30 of them, lol.

Maintenance isn't an issue for awhile. Dealership is offering me 5 years of free maintenance. By then I'll probably be on to a new bike. As I send, the one I'm looking at is complete beginner.(except break, etc.)

Harley's start at 900cc so are you calling a sportster a beginner bike?

Depends upon maintenance and the way it was ridden of course, but on a cruiser, I wouldn't start to worry till 100K or so.

Crotch rocket I would worry at about 25K.
