Fencing is about the most non-gay thing you could do besides clubbing tigers.

But MSS, that was a great explanation of how to do it right and have it be the least amount of awkward to start.
I'm still going with DC on this one though. You said previous fencing experience, that's not fair. I'd see starting to learn how to skillfully fly a kite sooner than beginners fencing.
Although dead, I think we should challenge ourselves to a skateboard one of these days.
Ah but no one asked me about my first club that I joined  .
The year is 1999 or it might have been 1998 I was walking down a main street in Scraton PA. I was looking at store fronts and saw one that said The Fencing Exchange. With a poster for Zorro in the window. I walked by it for a couple weeks before nerving up to check it out. I went upstairs one day the minute they were supposed to open, talked to the coaches, took a 30 minute intro course and I was hooked. I did visit a couple more times and talked to students and parents and learned more (which is why I suggest that). After that I paid my club dues, got lessons, and competed A LOT. I made my way from E rank (beginner) to C rank (intermediate) in a year. Missed my B ranking three times in competitions.

I'll probably end up checking it out one day. It does seem like a fun way to get some exercise...

It is a great exercise. Endurance, Muscle control, and focus are what I learned from it. Sadly Fencing is not for people with great muscle strength. Heavy weight training and body building slow a fencer down. But if you want to increase muscle speed, agility, and twitch muscle response fencing is the way to go.

I wonder if there are any battle axe fighting classes I could join

Also the updated swashbuckler class, single blade fighters, as well as potential in bard class.
