I'd wager only 20% to 30% actually use their education in the real world, at least in my generation
There's many majors that are completely worthless to have in the college curriculum

I think a flat percentage is a weird way to look at it.
We need a certain workforce and they need whatever education to do their jobs.
If jobs that don't need an effing degree would stop requiring one for the job and invest in training instead, the demand for degrees would go down.

It would be nice, but with an economy like this it's not going to happen. Employers can demand any kind of crazy stuff they can come up with, and they'll get it for rock bottom prices.

Education has become a business racket in a bubble because of government interference, so it is nigh impossible to say what percent should be going because the numbers are already so skewed. I actually had a very recent experience with one of the facets of this racket, it was blatant and shocking enough for me to consider to see if I could get a local paper to pick up a story on what I saw.

there is abundant evidence for the effects of chronic stress on the brain. glucocorticoids like cortisol, the stress hormones, influence glutamate neurotransimission in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. the prefrontal cortex seems to be crucial for regulating behavior like making the difficult decision of holding out for the thing that's better in the long-term. the hippocampus is vital for memory and learning. chronic stress has negative consequences on these parts.
not only that, but in either mouse or rat models (i don't remember which) they can show that chronic stress in the mother can be passed down epigenetically to the offspring. the evidence for this is demonstrated in the behavior of the mother and offpsring and the methylation of their DNA.
with the neurobiology in mind you can take a whole new look at the legacy of poverty.
these things don't completely trump regular genetics, so i'm not saying that every poor and stressed person ends up doomed.
suppose that you don't know everything before you cast your judgements

"It is not just infectious diseases that demonstrate the powerful social-epidemiological correlation; it is also psychiatric conditions, which not only occur at higher rates in the poorest areas, but also cluster together, usually in disintegrating inner-city communities. Money is not a guarantor of mental health, nor does its absence necessarily lead to mental illness. However, it is generally conceded that poverty can be both a determinant and a consequence of poor mental health (Langner & Michael, 1963)."

"Mounting evidence suggests that acute and chronic stress, especially the stress-induced release of glucocorticoids, induces changes in glutamate neurotransmission in the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus, thereby influencing some aspects of cognitive processing. In addition, dysfunction of glutamatergic neurotransmission is increasingly considered to be a core feature of stress-related mental illnesses. Recent studies have shed light on the mechanisms by which stress and glucocorticoids affect glutamate transmission, including effects on glutamate release, glutamate receptors and glutamate clearance and metabolism. This new understanding provides insights into normal brain functioning, as well as the pathophysiology and potential new treatments of stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders."

the rich and the gifted win a lottery and you say: only they deserve the benefits of higher education. lol, I'm afraid science reveals how petty and out of touch your opinions are.

The rich pay their way for college
The gifted get voluntary scholarships
Their education is covered without a hint of evil/immorality
Those who advocate that the taxpayer fund eveyones education are advocating theft as the method for payment. Theft is imoral, and illegal.
It is not the corporations or the gifted that are the bad guys, but those who advocate universal education through theft that are the true evil persons in this debate

You know someone is really dumb when they see education reform in terms of good and evil.
And BT has yet to separate himself from evil by leaving the country. The only thing worse than evil people are the hypocritical/apathetic who feed it.
