I was forced to read the book in and watch the movie in AP Lit. Almost ruined me on Steinbeck. I can't believe we cram this one down kid's throats when his other novels, Of Mice and Men and East of Eden (not to mention short stories like The Chrhsanthemums) are a bit less dry and a lot more significant. The Great Depression was depressing? Communism is an alternate form of government to capitalism? YOU'RE BLOWING MY MIND HERE, STEINBECK! Not.

I don't know how I managed to miss these books in school, but I was never required to read any of them. I always thought that weird. But we did move occasionally. Maybe it was early years in one school and later years in another. Whatever. I still missed them as requirements. No matter, I still read them anyway.

Steinbeck was never required at our school. Of course, I think we mainly did accelerated reader where you could pick what you wanted to read up until the 11th and 12th grades.

I started reading Steinbeck on my own after reading The Pearl for and AR test and enjoying it. I also liked Hemingway and Faulkner. *shrug*

Just don't make me read any Fitzgerald, Waldon, or Conrad.

I'm guessing Rho doesn't know the underlying reason Steinbeck wrote Grape of Wrath.

He shared similar motivations with Sinclair Lewis for The Jungle.

"Muck Raking"?

I don't really think that was Steinbeck's objective...
