would spend the $2500 he got back from taxes on a 2 week Mexican vacation.

FYC: save the money for when you get fired next time (has been fired from the last 4 jobs)
Idiot: lol ya right

Becuase that $2500 over time is not going to buy as much as it used to? With savings interest rates at all time lows and the percentage rise in prices far outstripping any return you get from savings ... unless you buy something like gold or silver that will retain value ... we are coming close to the point where the best course of action is to spend the money you have while it still has some worth

I got $2k back from taxex.

It was spent on things I knew were coming up and should do anyways (car/house maintenance)

Because he can.

My husband isn't all that hot at saving money either. When we were dirt poor in the Army, I opened up a savings account unbeknownst to him and started squirreling away money. I was doing one of those "round up to the nearest dollar" savings plans, only I was doing it manually instead of the bank doing it for me. So over the course of a few months, I ended up with about $125 in that account. I think I started with an initial balance of $10. So not much, but we were definitely living paycheck to paycheck at that time.

But it came in handy- we had to get new tires, and although they were mostly covered under a recall we still had to spend $100, and my husband was worrying about where the money would come from. At that point I divulged the existence of the savings account (which has been for just such a necessity) and he was thrilled. He knows he is not good with keeping money in savings and told me to "squirrel away!"

Probably why he has me handle the finances in our family, for the most part.

We got about $2600, bought a couple of needed things, paid off a massive chunk of our credit card and put the rest into savings. We've done a couple of years of blowing our tax return on something we dont really need, now is the time to start saving and being sensible.

I'm 28, I've never lived paycheck to paycheck. I stuffed our tax return in our house downpayment fund.

...maybe I'm actually 60 or something
