Wider access to and more education about birth control would lessen the amount of abortion being sought. Obviously it wouldn't eliminate it, but if you were able to reduce the amount of murders because it is impossible to eliminate, wouldn't you want to?
The thought that people "could just not have sex" instead is ignorant of everything we've learned over the course of history no matter your own convictions on the subject. People are going to have sex.

Abstinence education doesn't work? Nancy Reagan was wrong? The fact that the federal government actually has been spending tax dollars on trying to talk teenagers out of having sex since 1981 somehow ended up a useless boondoggle?

Santorum is at least honest about it, he thinks every time you have sex you should be trying to make a baby, or at least happy that you very well might be doing so, or you are evil and sinning. Most of the rest of the men pushing this stupidity wont come out and say that, but it's how they feel. Sex is horrible and wrong and letting people have sex without holding the threat of getting pregnant over them is an abomination, why...those women might actually start enjoying sex and go out and look for it like those men do!  It's misogyny and hatred of women that prompt these ridiculous and 14th century based laws that those men keep trying to pass. Many of the men are so self absorbed and out of touch that they don't even realize how god damn stupid and insulting the laws they support are.....and bills such as the ones mentioned in the OP force them to take a closer look at their biases and their narcissistic, misogynistic ambivalence. You threaten to make a man take a rectal probe to get viagra and they might just think twice about trying to force women to undergo similarly stupid and needless procedures to obtain birth control or an abortion. Some it will never touch, but those men are hopelessly mired in the past and will never learn.
I dont really care who has sex with who as long as you take responsibility for it either before you have sex or after.(not via abortion) Im not trying to hold women back, they can go out and be sluts as much as they want and as far as thats concerned men can go out and be just as slutty if not more so for all they want to. But if it results in a baby like I said do the right thing and raise it properly or if youre not in a position to find a way either through adoption or something else rather than killing him/her.
This is a fine example of why we have so much crap going on in every aspect of our lives. People just DONT take responsibility anymore for anything. Because if you take responsibility if something goes wrong it can be traced backed to you and people have been taught to avoid that like the plague. Children see one of their parents leave, giving up responsibility of their family all the time. The media and schools are always saying, "oh honey its not your fault its always someone or somebody else" or they see other people taking the easy way out all the time. People hear about the tycoons on wall street not being responsible in their business practices and they think if they can do it why cant I? Everyone picks up on this then pass it down to their children and its a vicious downhill cycle til we've gotten to the point we're so callous and uncaring that some people dont blink an eye when someone talks about killing an unborn child.
If people took more responsibility for themselves and actually cared about themselves and their loved ones then the question of having an abortion would be a no brainer since there would hardly be any "oops" pregnancies. I dont get why people tell me to look at "reality" when this WAS reality some 50 odd years ago.(Im not saying that everything was great 50 years ago - alot of it stunk - but at least people had a few morals and scruples left in them then) Yes people did get pregnant out of wedlock but it wasnt nearly as high of a rate as it is now and to say the least it was a REALLY taboo thing too. Goodness forbid someone say that people should be responsible, thats heretic talk!

I dunno honestly Ive always been split on that issue honestly. If the choice were up to me I couldnt take someone off life support on the same principle of being against abortion. Just on the off chance that they miraculously wake up and are ok.

Which is not even remotely realistic, these things are all related, whether you like it or not.
I know many large families that aren't on welfare.
