U.S., Britain to agree emergency oil stocks release |
(Reuters) - Britain has decided to cooperate with the United States in a bilateral agreement to release strategic oil stocks, two British sources said, in an effort to prevent high fuel prices derailing economic growth in a U.S. election year.
A formal request from the United States to the UK to join forces in a release of oil from government-controlled reserves is expected "shortly" following a meeting on Wednesday in Washington between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron, who discussed the issue, one source said.

Yep, they pretty much said it's because it's an election year. Any thinking person should see this as a bad mark for Obama.

Probably a good thing... oil speculators just driving up the price again. OPEC has increased their supply to cover anything from Iran so this is not a supply issue.
I think we should maybe start looking at ANWR as our emergency oil and use this to beat down the speculators who just leech a living off of the American people.

Supply wasn't the issue to begin with, so I'm not sure how this is supposed to help. Oil prices are high because of Iran's saber-rattling and their oil export response to sanctions, and that doesn't even affect US oil inventories because we don't buy any fking oil from Iran to begin with. Gas prices have also been affected by regional issues, like the refinery fire here in WA.
I would be surprised to see a substantial drop in gas price from this.
As for Iran's saber-rattling, the only people that's affected are speculators, who are idiots. Iran doesn't have the capability to close the Strait, and even if they did, it would hurt them far more than anyone else, because that's how they export their own oil, too.
