No one trying to lose or control their weight should drink any soda. Sugar or sugar free.

I keep thinking about getting one just to readily have carbonated water. I need to figure out a ghetto way to do it with my CO2 tanks...

If you keg just fill one with water. You'll want to keep it around 30 PSI and either run longer lines or use bayonets to slow it down so it doesn't degass when it leaves the tap. I make my own syrups but they sell them too. Syrup in a cup add carbed water from keg add ice.

Thought about it. My concerns are:

1) I don't know how I feel about tap water sitting around with no alcohol to kill the bad stuff
2) I don't want to get a second regulator to keep water at 30 PSI and beer at 12 PSI

I drank sugar-free soda for about 10 years and didnt gain any weight. It's like anything, have it in moderation. If it's all you're drinking, then you have a problem.

Yeah I don't drink enough soda to make this in any way worthwhile.

We drink maybe 2-3 glasses a day each, so its totally worth it for us.

You don't think that is a lot?? Every day?

Carb'd and chilled there really is no problem. The problems you run into is keeping the syrup from growing crap since it is typically heavy in sugar. The regulator thing comes down to preference... when I built my keezer I wanted the control so I got a nice secondary regulator. It is a lot cheaper just to use splitters or a manifold though. To each their own.

I got really excited about this thing not long ago. Then it seemed like the cost of getting into it wouldn't really pay off. If we were heavy soda drinkers, maybe. But we're really not. If I buy a 12 pack of Coke (got to be cans), it could easily last me 2-3 months.

I would consider it, but the idea of sending in bottles to get refilled sounds expensive.
