if he did, i bet it was only because he was hounded by reporters before the team came to him.

Carter, IMO it's a whole different team when they move, but i can see the point i guess.
His statement was that it never happened.
Mine was that it's a fairly regular occurance.
The thread that I got those from also had some Lions player in 2005 and several baseball players.
Far more often than "never".

his statement was he never HEARD of it happening.
even if it was a statement of just never happening, it's about the same stretch as saying it's a regular thing.
not every year you see this happen, and not exactly made a national story like this either.
dilfer wore a retired number of a 'close friend' also...
as far as the lions one goes, now that i read it i think it's disgusting that they allowed it.
so that makes 4 NFL retired numbers worn...hardly regular.

WTF is a jersey number really going to do for Manning? They retired it as a tribute and are bringing it back because, why? Peyton is superstitious? More talented? What entitles him to undo the honor bestowed upon Frank Tripucka when he has accomplished NOTHING as a Bronco?
What's the point in retiring numbers anyway if you're willing to bring it back for a more talented player? The Broncos are belittling Frank Tripucka’s accomplishments after putting him on a pedestal of elite Broncos and it doesn't seem right to me...
New Denver etiquette for retiring a number;
'Nobody will ever wear your number again... unless we trade for a super star in the future.'
And I don't really care if Frank Tripucka gave him permission, the organization should have more integrity and Frank should never have been put in that position.

the whole huge list you made Chogy, maybe has two question marks on it.. The Nationals are free to do it.. they are not the Expos, and I'm not really sure about Largent
and I never said never like you said.. I said never heard.. meaning if there are, there are only a few small examples.. as you listed

plenty of writers have criticized this too, even read a few today that previously had their lips firmly attached to his ball sack.
i would like to know exactly who brought this up originally.
