After talking personally with Frank Tripucka in the last half hour or so, new Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will wear No. 18 in Denver.

The number had been retired since Tripucka retired in 1963.

“It’s perfectly OK for him to go ahead and use it,’’ Frank Tripucka said last week from his New Jersey home. “I would be honored to have him wear it.’’

Tripucka’s No. 18 is one of three numbers retired by the Broncos. The others are Floyd Little’s No. 44 and John Elway’s No. 7. Manning wore No. 18 during his first 14 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

“It’s been retired for 50 years,’’ Tripucka said. “That’s long enough.’’

What do you expect the poor guy to say? No?

And clearly they approached Tripucka first, and put him on the spot. I'm fully convinced now, all speculation is gone. Manning is a dick.

LOL. I like how no one said sh** when this happened in Miami this year, and in Washington. (MLB of course, but there was no uproar from Brandun about those)

Frank Tripucka insisted that Manning wear his retired number during his time as a Bronco. Otherwise, Peyton would have stolen Jake Plummer's number.

That's because nobody watches baseball.

I forgot, here on ACF there is no other sports but NFL and Hockey.

And hockey is hit and miss.

Insisted when? After the media blitz aimed at Tripucka initially, or during the conversation that Manning had with the 84 year old man with Alzheimers?

Even NBA is ahead of MLB here. MLB is even lower than soccer!

In the world, nothing beats Soccer. The NFL isn't king, lol.

Is the NBA ahead of the MLB here? It's you, Ikki and Giligan. Sometimes I join convos, but it's usually only when the Bulls are in the convo.

edit: Even Cricket beats the NFL. Cricket is f***ing awesome.

The "media blitz" didn't start yesterday or Monday, after Peyton had made his decision to go to the Broncos. Broncos beat reporter, Mike Klis had talked to Frank Tripucka the same day Peyton came to Denver for his first visit - before anyone even thought of the potential number controversy. Klis asked Tripucka what he thought of Peyton using his number. He had the same response as the one we got yesterday.
