the reason the ebooks end up more expensive some of the time is publishers have forced amazon to keep the price at a certain price in an effort to keep digital books from completely wiping out the paper book industry. amazon selling them for a loss as someone else said earlier was killing the business model for keeping both formats viable. walmart and target have sold physical books for a loss before as well but publishers haven't tried to crack down on that. Honestly it should be the DOJ that does that as selling for a loss on competitive items like that is considered predadory pricing and violates antitrust laws. its all about the big guy trying to knock everyone else out of business and its why you see few independent or even chain bookstores anymore.
Actually, the DOJ is looking into Apple and a number of publishers for colluding to raise the price of ebooks.

yup. i know. i posted about that elsewhere last week. i won't repeat the rant here but it went something along the lines of someone is in someones pocket for them to ignore one and not the other.

Seems like a stupid reason to keep both viable. If we stayed with that line of thinking we would still be using VHS tapes.

you can't compare it like vhs to dvd. thats like comparing mass market paperbacks to quality paperbacks.
a better comparison would be comparing dvd to streaming. one is a physical copy the other is a digital only.

On the one hand I don't want them to stop making physical books because I love them, but on the other hand it's hard to justify paying a similar cost for something with vastly different production costs. I don't see why I should pay the same for a fancy word document as I would pay for a book.
You make the digital file available once vs. books you're talking about a nationwide distribution network with retailers, overhead, transportation, etc. Would be nice if you got a free digital copy when you purchase the hard copy too.

well they shot themselves in the foot when they decided to release ebook at the same time as hardcover. so they destroyed their hardcover sales. they should have pushed the ebook release dates out like they do paperback and then priced the ebooks similar to the paperbacks.

At the very least the hardcover should come with an ereader version.
