Ebook prices are all over the place. Some publishing houses go with a wholesale model. They sell the book to the distributor and let the distributor set whatever price they want. Amazon will often sell these books at a loss to get people to purchase the Kindle and to keep them hooked. Other publishers operate on an agency model where they set the prices for their products and the distributor gets a percentage of the sale.

I'm not sure about other products, but I've read in several writing/publishing trade journals that Amazon will sell several books and e-books (particularly genre writing) at a loss to try and corner the market. They had a lot to do with Borders folding based on this practice I read in Harpers. These evil practices can be forgiven a bit though, as they are relatively quite kind to self publishers and small press on their marketplace. Make no mistake, they want to be a monopoly and won't shed a single tear when there are no more physical bookstores left in America.

B&N actually has the hardcover for just a dollar more, that's weird.

the reason the ebooks end up more expensive some of the time is publishers have forced amazon to keep the price at a certain price in an effort to keep digital books from completely wiping out the paper book industry. amazon selling them for a loss as someone else said earlier was killing the business model for keeping both formats viable. walmart and target have sold physical books for a loss before as well but publishers haven't tried to crack down on that. Honestly it should be the DOJ that does that as selling for a loss on competitive items like that is considered predadory pricing and violates antitrust laws. its all about the big guy trying to knock everyone else out of business and its why you see few independent or even chain bookstores anymore.

The free prime version is just a borrow, like you would from the library. It's $5 if you want to own it.
