Seriously looking into it right now. A lot of the companies offering seem like scams, but some of them have generally good reviews.

The one I'm looking at right now is Trupanion. Basically 30/mo per cat for 90% coverage after exam fee (which my vet will fudge for me). 0 deductible.

I know I know, sounds expensive right? I agree. I just need to normalize my expenses right now. I can't have a sudden 1k-2k vet bill like I had a month ago.

le sigh.

I had trupanion. $30 a month for my dog. Same type of plan, 0$ deductible.

They sent me an email in december saying my premium is going to be raised to $45 a month. Cancelled. ****ers. I could have raised my deductible up to $1000, and paid $20 a month, but the problem with their plans are the deductibles are per incident, so basically it would be even more like lighting money on fire, unlike some companies which offer annual deductible.

I just channel the money I no longer give them into an account for him. Covers routine care as well, unlike stupid trupanion.

People think I am wrong for this but I have no issues with putting down a pet.

If it's worth it to you to have the coverage, yeah might as well go for it.

I would guess the average cat will 0-1 huge vet bill in their lifetime, but there's always fatty liver disease and diabetes and all that where it would end up being worth it.

Probably most worth it for a giant breed dog or ones prone to genetic disorders like the inside-out eyelash thing that requires surgery. Most people just pay for shots, a yearly exam, maybe preventative heartworm stuff and eventually euthanasia without any other costs coming up. Since this doesn't cover any of those costs probably, you're talking an extra $3600 for a cat that lives 10 years and may not use the coverage.

when it comes to cost of medical bills.
there are just as many animals in shelters that need rescue why waste a couple grand on a dog or cat?

this happened a couple weeks ago a friend of mines dog got hit by car.
they took the dog to the animal hospital after $1000+ vet bill( it was an after hours emergency) the dog still had to be put down.
now he says he wishes he would have put a bullet in the dogs head.

all because he listened to his wife.

Eh....I don't see it like that.

When I choose to take in a pet I am doing so knowing that things can go wrong and I am making the commitment to be financially responsible for such situations.

Don't get me wrong, if a pet of mine ever had a condition where they would never be able to lead a normal life again....thats a whole different deal. But expensive surgeries etc. that will result in them being 100% again? I'm on the hook for that, they are my pets.

I think it depends a lot on how people are raised around pets. I'd spend more money on a dog than I would on a cat for vet service, but in any case I wouldn't spend thousands on any animal if it was a bad investment. I however grew up in a farming community and we saw things differently than people who keep their pets exclusively indoors. I think we just learn to accept animal deaths as the way things are.

I can not really justify buying pet insurance.

I did drop about 2 grand on my cat once when she did a high dive from the 7th story of my dorm room, though.
