I was in roofing union local 10 in NJ for 8 years. They didn't do anything for it's members unless you were connected to the leadership and leadership only cared about itself. The cons far outweigh the pros as far as I'm concerned.

I support the free association of people.

If an employer is paying crap wage/does not care about individual people... the people should be able to unite to increase their bargaining power and demand better conditions or refuse to work.

If the union goes overboard and starts demanding more than the employees are worth than the employer should be free to use their bargaining power by hiring people who will work for less.

I am not sure why anyone would want to make the free association of people illegal... that violates the U.S. constitution.

those same free peoples can start their own god damn company.

Yes they could.

Or they could make the strategic choice of getting a bunch of their friends together and all refusing to work at the same time... that will cost the owner a bunch of money and force them to find new people or negotiate.

Most people like stability so I am guessing that the chance of losing your job is not going to be worth it unless things are pretty bad.

Things are working perfectly... just look at the recent Boeing crap... the Union got greedy and now Boeing is moving to other states... the Union has hurt the employees long term job stability... so the employees should find new leaders who look for their interest.

Since I live in Wisconsin, I've had this debate at least once a week for the last year. It's getting old.

I voted for Scott Walker, I'll vote for him again. For the sake of politics, I really hope he doesn't lose the recall election. It'll just go to show that unions can buy an election.

Currently in a union...I think they protect the below average and negatively affect the ability of the company to be competitive in getting work.

<3 my union... I got injured at work and was out for over 2 months... during that time my HR dept screwed up and and charged me leave and paid me via payroll instead of workmans comp. When my leave dried up... they stopped paying me. I went a full month without pay while out on a work injury. Since returning to work and submitting everything to the union they have been in with HR everyday working towards getting me the money that is owed to me and my leave returned to me.

If HR had their way I'd be out 8k, and 30 days of leave... thanks to the union they'll be giving all of that to me.
