What do marines think of you navy boys who've never seen combat, I wonder. You're a veteran of swabbing the poop deck, but when we need someone to commit grisly murder with frightening efficiency we'll call the real veterans.

by your definition of veteran they were not any "real" marines during my time, seeing as how we were not at war with anyone.

As far as what marines think of me? Go ask my Uncle who served in Vietnam, or my brother-in-law ( or is not a real Marine since he and served at the same time w/o conflict?

technically you may be right, but think about what the average person expects when they say "a veteran soldier". They usually mean a soldier who has seen active combat duty many times. 'Get me some veteran soldiers! No, I don't mean the ones who spent 8 years in the navy swabbing poop decks, I mean the grizzled military veterans!'

Even though I never saw conflict, I have seen things that I wish I had never seen and done things I wish I had not, but when you sign up you do what is asked of you without question. I have been handed coordinates and told to fire, I didn't ask why, I said yes Chief, and fired. The military runs missions all over the world you will never know about, I guess those aren't conflicts, or active comabt duty either.

I disagree. I'll be at 3 years in the military by the time the world ends in 2013. I have not deployed but like you have signed that blank check. That check entitles you and I to veteran status and the numerous professional, economic, and social benefits that entails.

However, the general public uses the term "veteran" in reference to a combat veteran. You and I are not that kind of veteran and it's asinine to pretend there is no distinction. Signing a check and watching the motherf--ker walk to the bank to try and cash it are two different things. I have no desire to misrepresent myself as someone who has actually been called upon to represent the US in armed combat...

So doing what you're told just makes you a good dog, it doesn't make you a combat veteran. Give me a grunt, a good old fashioned grunt who has a knack for surviving firefights over a guy on a ship firing what is essentially long distance artillery. You're a cannoneer. In the olden days, the infantry and cavalry would march right past you to do the dirty work while you fire your cannons from afar.
