Agree 100%. I have no first hand experience but I have several family members living with that baggage.

A veteran is one thing....being truly proud of what you did while in service is IMO what counts.
What bugs me is a lot of people "deploy to a combat zone." That doesn't really mean crap to anyone who's seen from the inside out. Sitting on a big, safe, FOB with fast food and ish for a year is nothing to write home about. There are so many people whose job overseas is to push paper, logistics, work in a shopette, etc. They're assigned a weapon out of formality. They never even go outside the wire. Are they important? Sure. but will they look back on their service proud? Would anyone else see it as meaningful?
Pretty sure Rage or any other ACF'er who has actually gone out on missons would agree.

i dont really see the whole point of even making the distinction. I rarely discuss my combat time because either a) people dont give a crap or b) the people who do give a crap cannot relate to what is being relayed.

I've no experience but I've grown up knowing an uncle who served in the Marines during Nam, a Grandfather who was a Carlson's Raider, and a best friend who has been on 10+ deployments as an Army Ranger. I like what you said earlier about not wishing "combat veteran" on someone and can tell you first hand that I've seen the changes it causes in some of the closest people to me. Regarding your part b, I know I can't relate, but I try as hard as I can to.

my first command was a JCS tasked outfit, I cant tell you anything more.
