It's a concentrated spring on a hill, and I'll be working a 2 step process. First to make the water available to use immediately since it will be needed, and then building something more sustainable later when there's an easier way to get supplies there on an ATV or something.
Heavy construction equipment isn't an option, and all materials need to be carried there through thick brush, hills, wet land, and forest. Because of this I'm thinking I'll start with a bottomless plastic spring "box", some gravel and rocks underneath, and a secure top. Use of rocks is a plus since those can be scavenged.

I would think you are heading in the right direction. Maybe a tarp or cloth weed block as it would be easy to pack in and will help with erosion. Basically a mini dam/reservoir should work to start. Even if it is a slow spring it isn't like you are relying on it for 24/7 water needs.

In this area it is 24/7 water needs. I know of other areas with water, but low and swampy. This water is fairly clean and uphill. I'll be building it while essentially backpacking, using it while surveying a large amount of land around, then doing some work to make way for other people. Perfect sanitation isn't a concern or even possible.

is there any clay around?
because clay holds water really well because of how dense it is.
that how we build ponds here, we dig down to the clay level.

I might be able to find some, but I can bring synthetics like plastic and screen with me. An enclosed spring tap/bucket is what I'm looking to build to start. I'll probably have some PVC pipe also in case I accidentally the whole spring and need some controlled drainage, but not much.

get some of that black landscaping cloth or plastic.
its comes in rolls and its light so carrying it in would be no problem.
just dig out a basin line the bottom with the cloth, replace some soil and let settle.
and then if you want to pipe water some place, you can get a small 12v pump with a solar panel and some of that black flex tubing stuff or use gravity.
the hunting lodge I use has its water come from a spring that uses gravity to pipe water down to the cabin. we use a propane water heater out of a RV to boil the water before its pumped into a army surplus water tank for storage.

I use my hands to guide the spring so I don't piss all over the place.

there's a website dedicated to this crap because of the amount of springs in my area. i forget the name though so i'm super unhelpful. it's related to the carlsbad alkaline water crap though. i'd actually find it for you but i have been given food poisoning and have not slept.
