what I really wish is that the torches were lamps and I could hang them down from the ceiling.

Steel, something is wrong with the monster spawn. They aren't spawning for the most part. I'm afk in the middle of nowhere at night if that sums it up. I don't know what might have happened. I'll google it to see if it was a sneak patch or a bug.

I've found a cheesy solution for that aside from the plop a block on the ceiling, make a hanging chandelier! Use blocks all the way up to 1 block below your ceiling, drop a fence post on that top block so it connects between ceiling and block, rinse repeat as far down as you want you dangling light, then place your "meh" wood block with the 4 torches around it. Still not quite as nice as a normal light but really looks better than the normal block on ceiling light.

Yeah lamps would be a nice addition. Something that can be hung from any angle and provide light in all directions. Even if it is just a block like a glass block with a glowing ball in the center.
The monsters still sparse? If so I can drop in and see what is up then maybe pull a restart. I'm in the office though so it'll be a quick in and out.

AFK at monster traps...
It's been decided that going AFK at a monster trap is fine for a short while (making a sandwich, walking the dog, etc.). Overnight is not acceptable. If you are AFK at a trap for too long and don't respond you will be kicked from the server. Being kicked is not being banned. Anyone who is kicked is free to log back in at any time. A kick is a forced logout. Nothing more.

Ahh I must've missed that... yeah farming like that isn't really with our "do it all on your own" thing. Waiting for trees to grow is kind of pushing it too IMHO. Been thinking of loading a plugin that handles idle times but am not sure if that is needed yet.

It is just the free nature of the resulting loot. I have no problem with making a monster trap and putting it to use but sitting at it overnight and filling your inventory with loot is no better than us just giving it out. As long as you are there and not just camping it that is fine though.
As was previously mentioned grabbing a bite to eat or run an errand is fine but afk all night is another thing.

I just thought that the work put into it up front would negate the AFK time spent later on.
but, in either case it's not going to affect me much, just means I'll not be building my other trap
