Okay, granted...I play with my boys on occasion, and from far from a minecraft super genius......
But I found a nether fortress with a blaze spawner, and I just sit there after drinking 8 minute fire resist potions and farm blaze rods/xp without getting hurt at all (They can punch you for 1 heart worth of damage, but that's rare). In 3 potions, I can usually get a stack of blaze rods, and quite a bit of XP.....

Yes that works too. 
The point of the constructs/projects is more "can I do it?" than anything else.

I've not done any sort of alchemy yet; so I don't have that ability.
And like Steel said... it's just fun to make over the top things sometimes
I want to set up a series of buttons/pistons to push them along a path from one spawner to another as I happen to have two close to eachother

Weird is that the whole message? Can you log directly into minecraft.net and access your profile? Can you log into the game initially and just fail when you get to the server login part? Are you using any plugins or mods? Have you tried deleting all the minecraft files and redownloading?

Wall three thick with lava in the middle. Gets the curious every time. That or sand above the ceiling.
