OK started it. Same problem as last time... packing everything together is harder than the basic circuits, lol. I'll work it out a piece at a time though as I don't remember a damn thing about the old layout.

Fire up our old world in single player and take a look at the configuration?

I probably will. I used a couple tricks to reduce the size and for the life of me I can't remember.

Steel, can I pick your brain about setting up a server, I have a load of RL friends who are wanting to start playing so we want to set up our own server for them.

We have a windows server with no worries about space or bandwidth.

I've downloaded the server exe and my husband installed it on our server last night. He got it working briefly but after that it wouldn't let us log in at all. Anyway, we're both pretty clueless, so any hints, advice and links to md packs that would be worth having would be awesome,

thanks

I went with a dedicated linux box that runs all in memory (ram disk) but it will run on pretty much anything. The only problem you will run into will be performance. Its two biggest detractors right now are memory requirements and excessive IO to the HDD. The suggestions I have read say around 100Mb per user dedicated to the minecraft server when you start it. In practice though it seems to be almost double that. As for the IO thing it is just a design issue in how the map handling is coded. They are working on it though and that should provide a huge improvement in server performance once it is done.

At the very least you'll want 1Gb or more dedicated to the server when you start it and the world running on its own drive, the fastest you've got. Everything else is pretty easy to get wired up as long as you understand server basics, port forwarding, firewall tweaking, etc. Most of the configuration for the server itself is just text files which, once you get familiar with them, are easy to work with.

Oh and for the server crew... I'm on a new project and need a 64bit linux install to play with so I ordered a barebones quad core AMD64 and 16Gb ram. Once I build the box I will probably move our server over to it. That's roughly 4x faster and with 4x the memory. The biggest benefit being the 4x the memory so I can expand the ram disk and allocate about 4x more memory to the server process. Not that we really have any issues right now but if I need to do it anyway might as well reap the benefits.

Looks like rdiff went rogue on us again. Going to let if finish the cycle, if it can, so we don't have a rollback. The server is thrashing though trying to use the swap. Shouldn't ever hit it but it did for some reason. Will keep an eye on it and kill it if it doesn't clear up soon.
