Schoo remember that waterfall in the distance across the bay when you emerge from the cut in that mountain?
Welp was exploring the mine and after a long long time of exploring I ended up coming out on the far side of the waterfall's mountain...
Spent days in there gutting it and barely made a dent.
And its still easy to get lost in there even with the torch trick.

I just mark the intersections of passage ways with a pattern in the stone pointing the way. that way I don't use up torches.
but torches might work better.

I wall off dead ends with cobble, leaving them lit with torches, and stick a torch in the middle of the cobble wall... cuts down on the confusion. In intersections I use torches to indicate which branch runs back toward an exit. The dead end thing really helps though, specially in mine complexes. I strip the tunnels clean of resources and wood and whatnot then seal them off.

Some I seal off others I like keeping open but simply place 3 torches in a line to mark it as a dead end.
Endless piles of wood and coal so torches are not a problem
