it sure sounds like the shop is to blame for this, they usually take the tires off to fully inspect the brakes. I would imagine your car is totaled, a car that old doesn't take much.... I'm fairly certain mine would be considered totaled in a fender bender. I would not expect the shop to take responsibility however, so see if they have video, lots of shops use video these days because of how expensive their tools are.
I'm glad you weren't hurt worse, but you should definitely see a doctor, you don't have to hit your head to have whiplash.

One of the reasons that any time I bring my car in for any work where a wheel is coming off, the second it comes home I inspect it to see the quality of work they did and properly torque my lug nuts. Gotta put that snap-on wrench to use every once in a while. One reason I always inspect their work is I got my car back after I brought it in for a clutch/flywheel, master cylinder, and slave cylinder change they didn't change the master or the slave. If I still had my air compressor and engine lift I'd have done it myself and not had any of the problems.
