Better to dull the pain than willfully forcing that pain on others.

If you live long or hard enough you eventually realize that life IS pain. I guess it's better you live in ignorance of that as long as possible.

For someone that isn't suffering from a mental illness, probably being relevant. It's not just ambivalence toward others, there are significant mental processes being altered and impaired. Not to mention the extreme sense of distress and pain accompanying many of them. Yeah, it might be ostensibly selfish to us, but they aren't necessarily capable of thinking rationally or normally.
