The problem now is this:
We have an area designed for 100 vs 100 combat, reduced to 5 vs 5, because only 5 people from one side queue...
So, what this has done is exclude about 90% of the players, in order to provide "balance" for 5% of the players....
It's the tail wagging the dog, it is ignorant, and it is very unpopular.

I don't know the answer, but turning Wintergrasp into a huge outdoor instance is kinda the suck.

I wonder if drawing from multiple servers would work? At least it would get the epic back into the battle, this over sized WSG 10 vs 10 type of match is just sad.

I love the change. If you can't get in, tough for you. I play both factions on the server where my toons are. I knew what it was like to see horde roll in, demolish everything in sight, and spend the final 8-10 minutes of a match blasting the alliance starting area.
Where is the fun or balance in that?
Now, most of the matches are very tight. (That's what she said!)
Would you like it every time you went to WSG it was 10-vs-2? Or 15-vs-4 in AB?
Forget the "open world" PvP zone nonsense. Blizzard never will get that right. Wintergrasp is a battleground just like all the others. Tenacity was a totally unworkable solution (unless, perhaps, they decided to give tanks the same level of tenacity as the players). As it was, you could be under dog playing with 15 tenacity, but because you HAVE to have tanks to win, you have no chance at all.
I have been in matches on both sides since the patch and they are a LOT more fun. So you can't get in? Sucks for you. Roll a toon on another faction.
It's no different than other BG queues. On the horde side folks have to wait 10-15 minutes for random BGs, on alliance it's instant (on the realm I play on).

The fault here lays with the designers and not those implementing the vision.
Having been exposed to and in the development world for a very long time I can safely say... most businesses would be very happy to have access to a B team of developers.
That is saying a lot for a market full of outsourced go republican Indian developers who don't speak English.
