So finally built my new system. I am re-installing WOW. I get past the WoTLK Dvd installation, and whoa and behold there is a 10G patch. There may even be one after that. My 5mb internet is downloading the patches at a max of 235kbs. So its 24 hours before I can play (assuming there is no other patch after this load). 24 hours? How the hell do new players do that? You pay for a game at the store, bring it home, install it, your all pumped to play, and OOHHOHH! 24 hours of patching!

Crazy to me.

Well, roughly 5+ gigs of that is for the recent expansion.

If you were to install from the disc prior to logging into the current game, you probably would have a lot smaller patch.

It's like that with all games, ones that have large expansions and are getting on in age.

You probably got an old box.

Every few months, makers of MMO's will reprint their games to be as up to date as possible, installing all previous patch data. You're probably just getting all the Cataclysm stuff, which definitely hasn't made it to stores.

If you hadn't done this on the eve of an expansion, you'd probably only have to patch a couple hundred megs and be good to go.

I installed it mid-Oct, but I downloaded the client from Blizzard. Took a few hours till done. It was faster than in the past.

Agreed, the most I've experienced (especially recently) was, maybe, thirty minutes? Each expansion updated with the patches except for Wrath of the Lich King, of course.

Edit: Okay, are the boards acting up or something?

Yep. You'll always get the most current updated version, which will cut down on patching and downloading after installation.

(One thing I always do is turn off the peer-to-peer stuff if I'm doing a complete download/reinstall - always goes faster for me, getting it via direct transfer.)

I had heard somewhere that newer releases of the game have newer versions of the game data.

I survived to the end and got nothing out of it, but hey.
