Is this a cataclysm change? They seem to award about double what a regular mob would award, while slow going, it seems like it would be feasible to level entirely through gathering, exploring, and pvp.

I was going to post something on this last week but just lost track of doing it. You’re just about right on w/ your thinking but of course the gray ones give very little xp. I actually leveled from 80-81 in a night just mining. It went extremely fast and I could have just kept going to 85 I feel like. On my alts I’m just killing it w/ having mining/herbing. I see a dot pop up and I grab it. The xp just keeps rolling in.

You gain exp for gathering now? That's awesome.
I'm surprised they don't just implement a constant exp rate where you gain X amount of exp per second depending on your level as long as you're logged in.
Better yet, maybe you could just type in what level you want to be during character creation...

My warrior has already 80 to 81'd off of a single instance, some exploration, but mostly mining ore for my other toon's JCing.

Yeah my gatherer is almost 83 without doing any quests. It's kinda neat
