Sub is more about "I'll kill you before you can kill me, because I'm slick and have a big bag of tricks"
Assassination is "I'm so good with my weapons, that all I need is one shot."
Combat is "I'm going to dodge/parry/evade everything you throw at me, and slice you to pieces, even if there are 5 of you."

Sub and assassination both shine when moving from stealth...however, once you have done that, you are much more vulnerable.
Combat, while yes you can stealth, is more about what happens when you are visible, after breaking stealth, and shines when you are in the open, and is the better of the three against multiple targets.
In my mind, Sub would be a the true rogue...sneaky, full of tricks, agile as a cat, and always seeming to come out on top.
Assassination would be a ninja, silent killer. One shot and you are toast.
Combat would be the Samurai...you and two buddies better have your sheet together, or your heads are going to roll...

Nice write up! Combat is the master swordsman/swashbuckling pirate (think Will in Pirates of the Carribean) (edit: scene with Jack from movie 1 in the blacksmith forge)

There are those who play tank classes, and those that tank.
The weapon is only as good as the person wielding it.
Free advice is often worth what you pay for it: nothing.

EQ2 has a Rogue subclass called swashbuckler, very similar to Combat rogue, so yeah, good analogy. I'm attempting to teach my combat rogue to be more like Keith Richards. She has the drinking part down, working on the accent.
