It's not a male or female thing.
My daughter and I have both main tanked for years, in raids, small groups, etc.
My son also main tanks, as raid leader, as a PuG raid leader.
My son also heals. He's the only healer I trust to cover my back when I'm tanking. He feels the same way about me healing when he's tanking. Nothing maternalistic about it. We're both hardcore, aggressive players that care about group dynamics and effective playing.
The archaic notion that females can't or don't tank or can't tank effectively makes my entire guild laugh.
People usually play the class best suited for them, and how they think/operate.
Tanking is a mind set.

There are those who play tank classes, and those that tank.
The weapon is only as good as the person wielding it.

If ignorance were painful, half the posters here would be on morphine drips.
Everyone playing WoW knows everything about playing two classes: 1) their own and 2) Hunters

When I first started playing MMOs I rolled tanks, thought that was what I would like. IRL I'm a fairly aggressive guy, ex amateur boxer, ex juco linebacker, not particularly long on subtlety, lol. Found out I hated tanking. My favorite classes ended up being Rogue types. I enjoy setting up my fights, picking battles carefully, etc. So yeah, I don't think there's much of a correlation between someone's real life persona and their choice of class.

My guild had 2 female tanks and one of them is my wife. With the other lady, she was good as raid leader and tank. I think the guys were too scared not to follow her lead..haha.

My guild leader is female, and was one of the top geared and achieved tanks on my server throughout WOTLK.
Two weeks into the xpac she doesn't show any sign of being dethroned.
But yeah, she may be the only female tank I've come across. She's also a monster at PVP.
And ironically, if you're into really skinny girls, shes very hawt IRL too.

Of course the rarest female tank has to be a female Gnome Warrior, I have only ever seen two.

Yep. My main gaming partner is female, and been in a lot more guilds than me, I would say the stigma of a female lead tank in a raid is less then before, and in many places doesn't exist (as it shouldn't), but there are still people and guilds that are kind of aholes.
That line of thinking is archaic and with as much information and instant information we have today, it's frankly embarrassing to even have it come up as a possible issue.

Half of my warriors have been gnome! My daughter's raid tank was a gnome. I still have screenshots of her wearing Imperial Plate. She looked like a toddler wearing her big brother's football gear!
Her tank is now a gnome DK, just like Mom.
