That's pretty much spot on, yes 
minor edit -
up to 100 skill = collect fragments only
100-375 = collect and build
375 - 450 = after you farmed TONS
375-525 = pray
375 gives you max 6 frags, and you do NOT get the sites in twilight.  ie more troll sites per run

So if you "blew" it by combining pieces as soon as you got them finished at skill lvl 50 and made 2 grey items, one of them using Troll pieces, do you have zero chance of getting this sword when you hit 450?

Of course not!
Since it takes a few digsites to complete a common artefact, basically, every few digsites you do, you get another roll of the dice. Saving your fragments just gets you a whole bunch of extra rolls of the dice straight-up when you hit 450 and start combining them.
But even if you do everything "wrong", you've just made it take longer (on average). You certainly haven't screwed yourself.

looked at the rewards, and honestly i was disappointed. my main is a rogue..and nothing for a rogue! you would think they would at least put something in there for everyone. /rant off...now i dont have to waste my time with this profession..
hope they add to it, and im sure they will...but until then, i wont be sinking my time into this.

That's pretty nice. I still haven't done anything with Archeology other than try the dig skill once or twice then move on.

Since the epic gear is bind on account, you'd probably be better off considering what might be useful for you alts, rather than your main. Mains have other ways to get gear, alts, not necessarily so.
