2k DPS on a few raid bosses is not 'leaps and bounds'. They needed minor toning down in PvE, that much I will admit. This only goes for ONE spec though, as the other two specs are bottom of the barrel trash for DPS. Even then, nobody is even remotely geared to compare DPS in a practical manner. Hunters scale very well early on with gear, but slow down dramatically.
The shot reductions(survival) originally proposed were horrible from a PVP standpoint, being that they are already subpar in PvP. Hunters don't even spec for their 31 point talent, due to it being so bad and dispelled with a simple button click.
Not only that. Blizzard posted that haste would now affect their two main focus generation shots...........which are already affected by haste. This was the main reason for the nerf. They give us a use for haste, but lower some of our damage. They proceeded to PR spin it after they got called on their screw-up and said they were going to make the haste calculations work like Slam for warriors. Yet if you notice now, the Slam change is reverted also.

@Grim
If they decided to nerf Serpent Spread, it would have a HUGE affect on the ability for a hunter to do some important AoE jobs in raids. The worms on Magmar fight being a prime example.
