Some people have stuck with their class ever since they started playing. Some people switch it up and try a new class every expansion. Some people change characters like a druid changes forms. With each expansion, classes have seen some pretty serious overhauls. Are you the kind of person that sticks it through and makes adjustments? Have you changed classes quite a bit depending on what interests you? Are you still playing the same class you played in Wrath of the Lich King? Why or why not?

I had a dream. It was an incredible dream. When I awoke, I had a huge mess to clean up.

I'm what you'd called an "alt-o-holic", in that I play multiple characters. It's a double edged blade decision, but overall I enjoy it.
The reason I like playing different characters is because I like to learn how they function. For example, a tank may be playing badly, perhaps because its their first time playing that class, or they may not know how a tank plays in a group setting. I can then help them out so that they can learn to play their class better. Or sometimes it's just fun to blow enemies away from a distance with a mage, if you get sick of killing them at close range.
Crafting is also nice. If i need something, often I can have an alt get an item for me so I don't have to pay the high prices players often want in the auction house.
Of course, it has its drawbacks. Most people have a dedicated character, one they play a lot and often get good gear on. Since I don't devote too much attention to any one character, that means that I often don't have great gear for any of them. Buying the flying skills is also incredibly expensive for multiple toons, and leveling them all through the same areas gets really tedious after a while too. Consequently this means that I don't really do much end-game stuff with them due to game's design of requiring gear more than skill. And since I don't PvP because of that design decision (again, he who has better gear will often win, even if you have better skills than they do), it limits what I can do once I reach max level.
Overall I enjoy playing different toons. The good overall outweighs the bad, but it'd be nice if there were other things to do besides running the same dungeons ad naseum for the slim chance that gear you can use drops, and that you win it.

I played a Shaman from launch until Lich King, when I switched to a frost DK. They completely gutted Frost's flow so I went back to my Shammy for Cata.

I actually have two mains. Split personalities for the win.
Can`t drop my green pigtailed gnomette rogue that I've been playing since release. Despite her being metaphorically "kicked in the nuts" for a 1000 years of painful changes, I can`t turn my back on her ^-^.
Green-Eyed Lady? looks up to me.
well, she`s a gnome. Duh.
My other evil half (which is also me, not a wife - yet), also been playing a protection paladin too. It was very broken but fun because you had to figure your way out and it did work hehehe. It wasn`t mainstream like today to be going prot. Nonetheless, I stick to them cuz the two stick to me.

When I saw this post that Change Happens, I thought to myself. Oh god, is this another blue post by blizzard trying to convince us that the game has to change and what they did was for our own good.
Anyway for me, I find a class, I fall in love with it and play the crap out of it. Xpac comes out and totally changes something and I have a hard time getting over that. So I find another class to fall in love with till they gut that class.

I had 10 icc25/heroic capable toons (one of each class) by the end of WOTLK and already have 7 of them at 85 with several maxed out for heroic/rep/crafted/therazane.
I would have more toons if the fascists at blizzard would give out more slots to altoholics.
I enjoy variety and enjoy just about every spec. Boomkin is really the only thing I have zero interest in and I'd probably like it enough if I tried it. The only reason I don't dabble in some specs is having no interest in maintaining a 3rd gear set on some toons when I already juggle 10 dual-speccers.
I'd say the only changes I really didn't embrace at first were a few recent cata changes. I didn't like being forced to tank in blood with my DK after tanking in frost forever - but I've adapted and mastered it. I also despised the change to focus for hunters but have grown to accept it (and never worrying about mana isn't so bad).
I'm still up in the air on cata changes, which simplified and already simple system. I see the reasons for a lot of it and there's still room for being a good player even with the simplifications.
The problem remains that no matter how much you simplify classes, talents, buffs, etc, there are still plenty of players who are too stupid to grasp the basic elements of MMO gameplay - there is no cure for some forms of stupid.

Yes and no. For all intents and purposes, I'm an alt-o-holic. I've been concentrating on my DK to get him geared up. I shelved him when I got him to 80 until cata came out. It was pointless to gear him up, just to do it all over again upon cata release. Now, he's in his full blue pvp set and has the conquest 2h sword. I play him to do dailies for argent heirlooms and was getting Tol Barad marks, though now that I've gotten what I wanted I probably won't do much in there anymore now. I've been still doing RBGs to bank some honor for when the next sets of armor come out.
I also have a 74 warrior, a 61 paladin, and the rest of my char slots are filled with 26 and below chars. I get very, very bored at max level. I also dispise raiding. I have so many character b/c of those reason and I get bored playing a certain class day after day. I need the variety to keep me interested. I did the same thing in DAoC. I had one server with max level chars to the "big boy" rvr. I then had another server full of perma-Molvik chars and a third with perma-Thid chars.
I'm also an avid crafter. I like to be self supportive so that I don't have to rely on anyone. So, in WoW, all of my chars combined cover all of the crafting professions. My DK is a resourcer with mining and skinning. This allows me to supply those that require those components and farm for the AH (I've made a killing since cata release on skinning alone mainly.)
I don't think I'll ever play an mmo where I don't have multiple classes if available. I need the variety, self supportive crafting and it helps me know how each class ticks so I know how to best counter them in pvp.

I used to not do alts. I had my druid and stuck with him. Then I did a server switch, made some alts, deleted them. Then another server switch, made some alts, switched factions, deleted alts again. So now I've got one 85 and one at 63(?)64(?) and the rest between 12-55. But I do, now, play all classes.
I'm going in order of succession. So after I get my DK to 85 then I'll work on my (55)Mage...and so on throught the line. The last one will prob be my Warrior, level 11ish.
