Whole lot of console bans went out yesterday for people jail breaking their PS3s. Of course Ebay and other places are being flooded with people trying to sell their banned consoles.
Make sure you can connect to PSN if you buy a used PS3.

Sigh...yet MORE misinformation from someone who read 1 post that started with "PS3 Ban" and didn't keep reading the rest of "from CoD Black Ops servers"
NO console has been banned from the PlayStation Network, ONLY from the CoD servers who aren't run by Sony.
