I think most of us going over to check out Rift, are doing so with the thought that we could be back here. Like you said, it's happened before.
We're a bit jaded.
As I've said for years, I'll leave WoW when a better game comes along. Is Rift it? Don't know. It offers a lot of things my guild has been looking for through 3 other breaks to beta and play other games. It has the best shot
at the moment of the kind of gameplay and community that we'd hoped to find in WoW.
Will the break be final this time?
Maybe.
Like I've also said, in the other thread, there are still things I like about WoW.
But it FEELS different this time. Because they broke the world I loved for a bunch of reasons that I think had less to do with lore/gameplay and more to do with trying to squeeze in more mobs without adding more structure (rob Peter to pay Paul if you will.) The railcart experience in the lower zones and then through the 80-85 experience complete with a lot of (imho) unnecessary cutscenes just broke the one thing for me and my guild that this game always had going for it: immersion.
They broke the unspoken covenant in many ways of a persistent world.
My concerns with Cata have been expressed objectively in other threads for almost 2 months. And I feel that the quality in both artwork and lore is less than was there during Vanilla.
I say that sadly.
I've been burnt out before, through games before WoW and because of WoW. I've taken breaks. And come back. I've logged numerous enjoyable hours out here solo and with my guild.
Even tried to make a go of Cat, having fun (not in the 80-85 experience), but by rolling new races and leveling exclusively through dungeons which has been a blast, even though we were saddened by the changes in those instances.
So it's not without trying.
Sometimes, you just know when something doesn't feel right anymore. When the energy is gone or however you want to describe it.
If Rift absolutely craters, say in 3 months or 6 months, chances are we will be back.
And we will be richer for having experienced whatever Rift has to offer.
