People ask this question a lot.
Blizzard's own press release stated that approximately 70% of people who try the game via the free trial quit before level 10.
So no, number of hours played is not the problem. Crappy design is the problem, there is no question about it.
People who have played the game for a long time played because they enjoyed it. No longer enjoying it has nothing to do with "too much time played" but everything to do with how the C team has destroyed the game all those people once enjoyed playing.
That's all there is to it, despite what the wannabe Dr. Phils of VN babble about. (Then again, those people only get a  in response ) 
That's not exactly the question I was asking. People buying the game and not continuing is not what I'm wondering about. I was questioning the people that have made it past level 10 and have played for years and are now quitting. To lay the blame entirely on poor game design is inaccurate. While I agree that activity and/or subscription numbers appear to be down, I would say that there are sill more people playing (and presumably enjoying) WoW than there are ones that have quit.

I'm playing Rift mostly - since there's new stuff to experience and it's a good game. But I still raid several nights a week in WoW. And I'll be back in WoW for a while to do these new instances a bit even though it's shard city for my raid toons.

Re-read what you just wrote and think about it from a sheer gaming turnover standpoint, because that statement is completely absurd.

Actually, I realized it as soon as I posted it, but I couldn't be bothered to change it. Half-assed effort on my part to be involved in the discussion/argument.
