Blizzard has made it so you have to choose one specific talent tree and stick in it, only allowing you limited points to put in other trees once you?ve put the majority into your preferred spec. Why do you think they did this? Is it a good change? Bad change? Do you miss ability to make your own spec to fit your personal play style?
The Topic of the Week is a contest run by WoW Vault! The best reply will receive VIP Insider for 2 weeks! Potential winning posts are judged according to length, interpretation of the subject and writing style.

Why: They did it to achieve balance, which doesn't exist.
Is it a good or bad change: Good and bad are relative. I'm sure they saw it as good, I personally see it as bad.
Do you miss...: Yep, I gritted my teeth and chugged through a lot of changes I didn't like. When character customization began to get neutered is when I drew the line and unsubbed.

Hands down I liked the old way much better.
WoW is far less MMO and much more arcade/action-adventure now.

Why they did it?
IMO, because elite players always crunch numbers, go with basic logic, or go to sites like EJ and use the same optimal builds. Players who don't think or dig end up playing substandard builds then complain or are unhappy. People playing hybrids or other screwball builds that aren't very effective are off in la la land and probably soloing daily quests and yapping in trade and don't matter much since they're not doing anything you can't do naked with zero talents anyways.
So, strip it all down and make it so that you pretty much have to be a complete idiot to fail to make up a good build. With so little room for variation, you almost have to make a build that, while it might not be optimal, can only be so many talents away from optimal due to having so few spare talents.
By stripping it all down more players end up with ideal/elite builds by accident or close enough without having to do the experimentation or out of game research.
So, there may be less room for variation but I don't think many people playing the game at a high level went with much variation anyways. A lot of talents were fluff or useless filler.
It does offer less to figure out and it's more like blizzard dictates the ideal specs rather than players figuring it out due to so little potential for variation.
Overall I don't like how they stripped and gutted the game with cata, particularly the talent system - it just wasn't necessary for a game that's wildly successful and was still growing. It takes away some of the mystique and challenge.

I enjoyed my DK more when I had a hybrid solo spec that had the pet of unholy and the self healing of blood.

The thing about the new talent specs, there is really no wiggle room on what abilities to select in the talent tree. They should have just made where you choose the spec line, then either the PVE or PVP build. Then based on your level assign the appropriate talents.
Don't try and give us a false sense of freedom of choosing how to spec, cause you really dont.

The tri-spec dual wield build for DKs was probably the most fun I have had in this game. I love DW and my DK just wrecked everything in sight with that build. I want it back. Now.

Umm why?
Because the devs are bad, arrogant and pigheaded.
You WILL play their way. Period, they will make it so you are required to play their way, if you do no, they will change the game so that any other way but their way is not possible.

The reality is that the only class that i can think of that this affects is Death Knight. (maybe the occasional ele/resto shaman combo)
All the other classes have always loaded up one tree then spread a few points here or there depending on pve or pvp.
For almost all classes there has never been a lot of wiggle room in specs.
4 optional points was not the norm. it has always been 1 here or 1 there.
So what's really changed? Not much. WoW characters have always been one tree heavy.

They hosed my druid and rogue specs. Especially druid, the rogue change I wouldn't mind, the druid one, ugh.
It's a hybrid class. Or, should be.
