Now, I don't mind chatting once in a while while playing the game but holy crap! This person won't stop trying to talk to me!

How do you politely say go away? Anyone ever have this problem? Do you put them on ignore? I've resorted to leaving my afk tag on... Am I mean? ;(

Sadly, you will probably end up putting them on /ignore

Been too many times a youngster comes into the game, or someone that is apparently very needy, and I stop to help them out, or answer a few questions for them, and suddenly I am their BF for Life OMG! The questions go beyond the "normal" newbie stage, the chat turns into constant demand, they expect to be spoonfed absolutely everything including "where is the bank?" at level 11, have you drop everything you are doing the minute they log on.... in short, you're "babysitting" them...... and even my kids when they were toddlers never acted as clingy as some of these people do.

I don't mind reaching out to others.

I understand someone who needs info, occassional help, or just someone to talk with.

I do mind somebody trying to constantly suck me dry when I'm playing for enjoyment/relaxation.

It's a fine line between "mean" and "healthy boundaries". Requires judgement, a willingness to admit it bothers you and the determination to stick to putting them on /ignore. Then do it.

Just because they send you a tell, does not mean you HAVE to respond...

Just like when your phone rings..it doesn't mean you HAVE to answer it....

there is no nice way to deal with this situation. as in real life, you need to politely tell them to stfu or just ignore them. i have had several of these types of "friends" over the years. as soon as i logged on...before my screen even loaded i had a message waiting from them.

however since its a game i don't have a problem telling them that i don't want to be friends. in real life i might be reluctant to be so blunt but its easier when typing text to someone i don't have to look at.

There is no nice way to tell someone they are annoying, but you could try to be honest.

For demanding noobs I usually resort to running them all over the world till they stop asking me for stuff. " oh..you want 1000 gold? ..sure meet me on the isle of dread in 30 min..I have a quest im heading there to do" they get there.." where are you?" " oh man..sorry.. meet me at light hopes chapel instead..got sidetracked..see you there in 20!"

This...

Lacking the simple implementation of an /anon feature, the only recourse short of telling them to piss off is to simply stop replying to them.

If ignorance were painful, half the posters here would be on morphine drips.
Everyone playing WoW knows everything about playing two classes: 1) their own and 2) Hunters
