Serious question about WoW's decline... |

After playing since release I left about 6 months ago for a little break. Logging in you could still find SW very busy and also see many folks out leveling up. I came back about a week ago in more boredom than anything and just wanted to play a little. Now it seems the game is just dead.
In the 80+ leveling areas I'm lucky to see another person out, and many other areas are just barren. Is something else out that everyone is playing or did I completely miss somthing in the last 6 months that caused everyone to leave? I know the game has kind of played itself out as it stands now, but that was even the thought 6 months ago and many more were still playing.

Are you really surprised to see less people in the leveling areas six months later? Most people have their alts leveled up and are doing the new five mans, LFR and DS raid.
Though there has been some significant player drop off, the game is far, far from dead. This past patch was actually prety good (especially in comparison to the rest of Cataclysm).

again, yes, lol. I'm seeing maybe 15 in SW (which always had 50+ on a Saturday-not including this weekend), and people all over the different 80+ areas. I don't see a drop off, I see no one out there. It's reminiscent of when I played DAoC and pre TOA it was packed, and after it slowly declined into nothing. I just wasn't sure if there was another game out that everyone flocked to or someting else was going on.

My main reasons for leaving was the constant "play our way or go away" attitude that came from Ghostcrawler despite steadily dropping subscription numbers that even Blizz had acknowledged, the extreme class changes that were made across the board and the level 85 dungeons.
During the first three or four years I played the game, I loved the pally class so much that I leveled several of them just for the fun of it. I would take a few months break from the game every so often then come back and level another pally. After Cata hit, I was so disgusted with the new "pally" class that I haven't played one for more then a week total since then.
I was toying around with the notion of coming back a couple of weeks ago but then GC put his foot in his mouth once again in a blog and twice answered a player's question or comment with the statement of " ou're wrong. Next."
That sort of arrogance and condescension from the lead dev of Blizz reflects very badly on them. Personally, I have no interest in paying a company when that is how their lead guy responds to customer comments or complaints. Very unprofessional for such a large company.

Blizz lost over 2 millions since Cata release, and probably lost another 2 million this last week alone (total conjecture) with the release of SWTOR. With SWTOR and Skyrim both out now, who the hell cares to play a blizzard game any longer?

Most will come back for the expansion I think and continue to do so in the future, provided they don't get too retarded. Ya, the panda is retarded, but its just a character class and is ultimately pointless anyways, as what matters is the overall world content. People keep focusing on the retarded panda for some reason that I don't get, but whatever.
The biggest difference for WoW's future is that Ghostcrawler has admitted that "trying to go back to hard core" was stupid, I am sure that the next expansion will be a pretty good mix of content now because of that.
For myself, the Progression and Loot System for Wrath was the peak of WoW. This could have been good, but the focus on "hardcore" just pissed me off. No, I don't want to spend 2 hours doing instances. I LIKED taking 20 minutes to run through an instance in Wrath and then grinding for Tier loot that way.

I survived to the end and got nothing out of it, but hey.

I think you nailed it. Trying to cater to hardcores though was a "fatal" flaw on blizzard's part. They will not recover from it.
The only way the next xpac willequal past successes is if they fire ghostcrawler and make a huge public announcement about it.
MMO nerds need blood, and copious amounts of it

I think that is something damn near every WoW player could agree on. Nothing like mutual hatred to unify a diverse population.

If they publicly announced the firing of Ghostcrawler, then uploaded a video of them throwing him off of the company campus, I would probably re-sub!

Currently in the MMO unemployment line.
Can I get $15/month for not playing them?
