Let's say, hypothetically speaking, that a group of folks here with no small experience running forums were to stand up a new set. The idea would be to provide boards for the active MMO's as well as the extra flavor boards traffic'd here in a relaxed (but not utter chaos and bedlam) atmosphere. In other words, clone what worked and drop what didn't. If such a place were stood up, how many here would consider giving it a try?

Consider this a hypothetical interest survey

Depends on the layout and style of the boards. Also on the rules of those forums.

How can they call it common sense when it isn't very common

I would consider giving it a try, but as stated, it depends on the result and the rules. Yes, I would give it a try. But, if I would stay would depend on the overall atmosphere. Honestly, I'm never diving into the nonsense some consider a 'desired' environment again.

Lesson learned.

I've said it before, but I post on a lot of forums. Some professional and some for pure entertainment. Only on VN have I seen a level of such uncontrolled stupidity run amok (i.e. Rift forum) to the point where it killed the community in such a devestating way. That's when I knew VN was doomed.

But, to answer your question again: yes.

Are you implying that the community was shit and drove away the masses, thus the boards activity went down and now the boards are going away? Ultimately the lack of moderators killed vn?

No, not the overall community. But, select members on various boards, did have the effect of warning off new and old members from the boards. They told us as much in various threads. I wouldn't go so far as to say the community was 'shit' because that's rather unfair. What I will say is that certain members are shit instead.

That said, some members on these boards, to include moderators, display unbelievable tact and maturity as far as discussions. So, it would be grossly unfair to disrespect the entire community for the actions of a vocal and obnoxious few.

Again, to be truly fair, official game forums killed VN as a whole. Back in the day, games lacked any forums to discuss their games. VN filled this void. So much so, game designers like Marc Jacobs posted here instead of their own forums.

Around the turn of the century, designers realized they could control media and opinion better if they offered their own forums through their hired moderators. This turn of events is what truly started to kill independent forums like the one here. Realistically, most of us are from those days when AC and DAoC drew us to VN. We've just been too stubborn to leave. And, maybe, the familiarity helped as well.

It would be a gross over-generalization to say those posters and lack of moderation 'killed' these boards. But, I will say certain acts or lack thereof didn't save it either.

I'll leave it at that.

I agree with Arden. It was not the over all community. Most of you are great and overall give to a thread. But there are a select few that come to just cause trouble and drama.

The discussion of differing opinions are great. That's what forums are for. To discuss those differing of opinions or ideas. But when you get trolls that post something that has no bearing on the conversation or makes no sense in any way shape or form that is trolling.

I'd go to the new forums. I love to read about discussing on differing opinions and ideas. Its logical. Its informative and it gives people a side of the conversation that they may not have seen before. That is what forums are for.

I would check it out I liked coming here over the years and learned a lot from people I liked and people who I didn't always agree with as well.
