I've played the violin for 15 years. I've also played the guitar and the bass guitar for quite a long time. I have never found an instrument to be quite as rewarding and moving as the violin. There's so many types of music that you can play on it! From Schindler's list depressing to the lively A little summer music ..to operatic quality songs, mozart, pachelbel, and even more modern or contemporary pieces like that theme song to beef its whats for dinner.
It's a very difficult instrument to learn and you have to be quite dedicated. It's going to sound like garbage for a while till you really start to master it. You realllllly need a teacher to help you learn it...a point which can't be overstressed...and on that note...scales scales scales...they are everything!
Playing it solo is very fun but the feeling I got when playing with an orchestra can't effectively be conveyed in words. I guess the best thing I can say is that if the violin moves you...it's something else entirely transcending that to actually play it
could not possibly have said it better. I haven't played the violin in years but the memories I made while performing with an orchestra are some of my very fondest.
It is very easy to learn how to make music with a violin, but it's the hardest instrument in the world to get truly good at.
Like Vihs said, if you decide to try, get a good teacher. You will be utterly lost without one.
