i'm thinking about learning to play it since my parents got rid of my piano. (i hate them for doing that. seriously.) i was thinking of maybe picking up the guitar or bass because you can do that pretty easily and the low end ones are really cheap but i don't really like guitar music by itself and after listening to bass covers of things i was all meh. the violin is my second favorite instrument to listen to. (piano being the first.) i'm still torn though between the 3. with the guitar or bass i could play along to music i listen to but with the violin i could play real music. anyone have any thoughts on this?

You might look at the cello, also. Dunno much about either, as I am a clarinet/bass clarinet/contrabass clarinet player myself, but I've always enjoyed a solo cello sound more than a solo violin.

Back in middle school, I played violin. In high school, I switched to electric bass. It was a lot easier for me to pick that up than guitar. I haven't touched either in well over a decade.

i don't want to lug a huge ass instrument around, so i refuse to take up the cello even though it sounds awesome.

Out of all the instruments I've learned to play, my favorites are the trumpet and euphonium.

You might also consider the viola. The viola is the "middle voice" of the strings, (sits about a perfect fifth lower than a violin), and has a much deeper darker tone.
I knew some viola players in high school that could bring you to tears with a proper solo. Of course I knew some that were so bad their scratchings would bring you to tears also.
