I know I don't normally post here, but it seemed like the only place I could discuss this! LOL

Took my 10 year old (will be 11 in Apr) to WDW Saturday. Of all days, her period started right there at Animal Kingdom after riding Expedition Everest. Talk about being unprepared!! I had absolutely nothing with me.

Anyway....I'm totally depressed today. My baby is growing up. I want her to be a kid forever.

At least she told you about it? Mine started in the car coming home from the mall, I thought all the drips in my underwear were the coke that I had spilled. (Surely, it could be, right? The color was about right, after all.) The next day there was more, I didn't understand where all the coke was still coming from. The next five or six months when it happened again, I hid it from everyone by stuffing my soiled underwear in a bag in my closet before I figured out what was going on (luckily for me I suppose it was a really light flow) and then I started stealing tampons out of my mom's box in the bathroom. My mom didn't bother talking about anything related to periods or sex until I asked her to buy some tampons while we were at the store - I was ten and a half by then, and she still didn't get that she needed to explain anything.

She bought a book when I was about eleven, maybe twelve that she sat down on the edge of her bed and let me look at, then put it away and never really talked about it again. I used to sneak in there and look at it - a bunch of pictures with mostly clothed people in strange positions and then a few diagrams of penises and vaginas, what you'd expect to see in a textbook.

I think if anything, I'm going to be too open with my children about sexuality.

Yeah, no one ever told me anything about the changes that would happen to me and I was totally unprepared. When I was 11, my mother was pregnant with my baby sister and the day she went into labor was the day my period started. I was really upset and crying my eyes out and told my grandmother I was dying! LOL My grandmother called my mom at the hospital and asked her what to do. My mom said, "ou raised two daughters, don't you know what to do by now?!?!"

I took the time to talk to my daughter about six months ago and told her about her period and how babies are made and how they come into the world (she was horrified and cried!! LOL).

Still.....at Animal Kingdom? What a weird time and place to start! LOL

I don't know, the Animal Kingdom is honestly sort of fitting...oddly enough.

My first thought was 'poor little girl', then I amended it to include you as well - I'm not sure what'd be worse, being you or her. Were you able to at least snag something out of a wall dispenser to tide her over until you were able to get to a store or home?

Yeah, but the wall dispenser in the bathroom we first went into only had a maxi pad. Do you know how huge that is on a 70 lb. kid? She told us her butt was angry because it was like having a constant wedgie! LOL

Second restroom we went into had panty liners, which was perfect for her. Right after that, we ate lunch and I asked if she wanted something off the kid's menu and she says, "I'm not a child anymore, you know." We all cracked up laughing.

I guess it is, Rhylla. I really don't want her to grow up, but I know it is inevitable.

Luckily, my mom was very honest and open with me about this. She had a little kit with books and pads. It was really great.

I don't even remember when my daughter started hers. I know she was older because of the sports. No trauma at all. She just told me one day she started and that was that.

Your baby is not a baby, when SHE starts having babies.

Good grief, I can't imagine wrangling with the concept of tampons when I was ten. I was eleven when I got mine and just used pads for a couple of years. That and being raised solely by my father...no WAY I was telling him what was going on. I figured it all out myself from magazines. Luckily in Germany they had teen magazines that went into FULL detail on everything related to ones reproductive system.

omg that is too funny, and yet awesome at the same time. When does your daughter turn 11? Mine will be 11 in February. She got some cramps a couple months back, but no period yet...I was worried there for a couple days! However I told her what the cramps were a precursor to, and to let me know if she noticed blood on her panties at any point (though I told her it might be a few months yet). Nothing yet...and I am hoping it'll hold off for a while!

Animal Kingdom though...I agree I think that is fitting. Hehehe.
